Holika Dahan: The Sacred Ritual Before Holi

The night before Holi is marked by Holika Dahan, a symbolic bonfire that signifies the triumph of good over evil. This ritual is rooted in the legend of Prahlad and Holika, where devotion and righteousness prevailed over arrogance and malice. People gather around the fire, offer prayers, and seek blessings for prosperity and protection from negative energies.

Holika Dahan also represents the burning away of past negativity, making way for new beginnings. It is believed that performing this ritual with faith brings good fortune, positivity, and harmony in life, setting the stage for the joyous celebrations of Holi the next day.

How to Perform Holika Dahan Puja?

On the day of Holika Dahan, the ritual begins by offering Akshat (rice), Ganga water, Roli, Chandan, Mouli (sacred thread), Haldi (turmeric), a Diya (lamp), and sweets to Holika. After this, items like camphor, sesame seeds, incense, guggal, barley, ghee, mango wood, and cow dung cakes (Uple or Goitha) are added to the fire.

Devotees perform seven circumambulations (parikrama) around the fire, seeking peace, prosperity, and the removal of negativity. It is believed that this ritual helps in getting rid of diseases, sorrows, and fulfilling desires.

After Holika is burned, people roast gram or wheat stalks in its fire and consume them as prasad, which is believed to promote good health, longevity, and prosperity. The ashes from Holika Dahan are considered sacred and are often kept at home to ward off negative energies.
